KIVA Peer Support Ambassador:

Irma Carrion

Dear Kiva,

My name is Irma Carrion, and I’m a licensed barber in the state of Massachusetts. My journey into barbering began when I had my son and started taking him to barbershops. Each visit was a challenge—shops were often loud, and when I requested scissor work for my young child, it was rarely done. One day, I decided I wanted to learn more, and the thought crossed my mind: If they can do it, I can do it too.

The very next day, I enrolled at the Massachusetts School of Barbering in Quincy and began my journey. During this time, I worked in the community, splitting my efforts between Dorchester and East Boston. However, a change in my health eventually made it impossible for me to continue cutting hair. I live with lupus, which has affected my right hand, limiting my ability to work directly in the field.

Although I am no longer able to provide services as a barber, my passion for the industry remains strong. This has inspired me to start a Boston Barber Supply company—a way to stay connected to the community I care so deeply about. Through this venture, I aim to support others on their journeys while bringing something new to the table.

I would be honored to serve as one of your ambassadors to help spread the word about your mission. We are all uniquely different, and it’s this individuality that makes each of us valuable to our community. Thank you for considering me for this opportunity.

Sincerely,

Irma Carrion
