KIVA Peer Support Ambassador:
Jamie DeCastro
As a military veteran, I have faced my own battles with anxiety and depression, challenges that
I recognize stem from my service. The journey to healing has not been easy, but I have sought
the help I needed, and I am grateful to have found the right medications that support my
mental health journey. This personal experience fuels my desire to give back to others facing
similar struggles.
My path in the beauty industry began with a passion for cosmetology, and before the
pandemic, I decided to pivot my career and become a barber. Over the past five years as
licensed barber, I have discovered something profound: the barbershop is not just a place for
grooming; it is a sanctuary for many. Clients come to me not only to enhance their outward
appearance but also to decompress and share their thoughts and feelings. I have witnessed
firsthand how a simple haircut can spark meaningful conversations that assist individuals i
processing their emotions and navigating their mental health challenges.
Working in a barbershop has allowed me to foster a welcoming environment where clients feel
safe to express themselves. I take pride in bringing my roots from the Bronx, NY, into my work
—infusing every interaction with a unique flair and genuine care. My goal is to create a spac
where everyone feels valued, heard, and understood.
In addition to my work in the barbershop, I volunteer once a month at a community day center,
where I provide haircuts to unhoused individuals. This experience has deepened my
understanding of the various challenges people face and underscored the importance of
community support. It is incredibly rewarding to offer a moment of dignity and self-care t
those who may feel overlooked.
As I pursue the role of a peer support specialist, I aim to leverage my experiences to guide
clients struggling with their mental health. I want to be a bridge—connecting individuals with
the resources and support they need. I understand the importance of empathy and active
listening, and I am committed to fostering an environment where clients feel comfortable
sharing their stories.
I believe in the power of shared experience. By being open about my own struggles, I hope to
inspire others to seek help and remind them that they are not alone. I want to advocate for
mental health awareness and support, empowering individuals to take steps towards healing
while also providing them with the tools and resources to navigate their journey.
In conclusion, my journey as a barber and a veteran has equipped me with the understanding
and compassion to support others in their mental health struggles. I am eager to channel my
experiences into peer support, helping clients find their voice, connect with appropriat
resources, and ultimately discover their own paths to healing.
Thank you for considering my submission. I look forward to the opportunity to make a positive
impact in the lives of others.
